The governor of Andhra publishes commemorative postage stamps honoring Alluri Sitarama Raju, a liberation warrior

S Abdul Nazeer, the governor of Andhra Pradesh, distributed six special covers of “Manyam Viplava Saradhi Alluri Sitarama Raju” on Sunday in recognition of unsung heroes.

As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Department of Posts has published the postal covers to mark the 100th anniversary of Chilli Post.

The Department of Posts has published a book that includes all six special covers as well as personal accounts from Alluri’s family members and academic researchers using philately to chronicle his valiant actions and the sacrifices of his lieutenants.

The event was attended by Col. V Ramulu, Chief Postmaster General, Andhra Pradesh Postal Circle, M. Venkateswarlu, Retd. PMG, Visakhapatnam, who played a key role in the publication of the Monograph, and other officials.

The British army were opposed by “Manyam Veerudu” Alluri Sitarama Raju in his fight against the atrocities committed against tribal people. He assaulted and stole weapons and ammunition from the police stations at Chintapalli, Krishnadevipeta, Rampachodavaram, Addatigala, Annavaram, and Rajavommangi.

His innovative method of informing the authorities about his planned assault on police stations was known as CHILLI POST and included attaching a message to an arrow along with a bouquet of chillies.

The Rampa Rebellion, which Alluri led with the aid of local tribesmen against the British, began in 1922 and came to an end in 1927 with Alluri’s martyrdom. The people of Andhra Pradesh are still in awe of his bravery and loyalty.
