Twelve households in Sainj village leave their houses due to fear of landslides

The area’s calm has been disturbed by the ongoing landslides in the Sainj subdivision’s Kartah and Soti villages, which have caused fear. Numerous dwellings in the communities have grown more susceptible as a result of the landslides.

The government, according to the villagers, is not taking the issue seriously; so far, only the patwari has paid the area a visit, and no significant action has been taken. The villagers said that after the July floods of the previous year, landslides and soil sinking posed a threat to the communities, and their buildings were in danger of collapsing. Twelve families from the two villages in the Sainj Valley are compelled to live in constant terror.

The people of Soti and Kartah are doing their hardest to rescue their houses as danger looms over them, but their worries have grown due to the ongoing landslides. The residents said that despite their repeated reports of the villages’ state to the government, no significant action had been made to ensure the communities’ safety, even after eight months.

Members of the Sainj Valley Vikas Samiti (SVVS) said that, despite the passage of eight months after the calamity, the families impacted by the floods had not received any assistance.

The association’s delegation sent a note requesting that Kullu DC Torul S Raveesh speed the process of paying compensation for the damages brought on by the July floods in Sainj last year.

The president of SVVS, Budh Ram, said that the flood-affected people had not received the assistance amount that the chief minister had declared. He said that the floods had entirely destroyed the lands of several people and left many others homeless. He said that the government had not implemented any real safety measures or provided compensation to the impacted parties.

According to the president, the government need to provide the impacted families land in secure locations so they may build homes. In locations that have grown susceptible and prone to landslides, he said, safety barriers should be constructed. He said that the Sainj River should be channelized as soon as possible, and bridges should be built as soon as possible at Tareda and Sapangani. According to him, the necessary steps have to be done to protect them from flooding during the monsoon season.

According to Budh Ram, the DC promised them that she would shortly direct the Banjar Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) to investigate their requests.
