Whoa! The Kapra Revival group chooses a wastewater treatment method

Hyderabad: The Kapra Revival team will soon use the phytoremediation method to repair Kapra Lake. Waste water will be transformed into fresh water using this technique, providing an essential remedy for the lake’s revitalization.

One kind of bioremediation called phytoremediation uses helpful bacteria and microorganisms to clean up contaminated water. The government has previously used similar techniques in a number of lakes, including Novotel Lake in Kothaguda, Yerrakunta in Shaikpet, and Chinna Cheruvu in Neknampur, in cooperation with a number of volunteer groups.

The levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) will rise dramatically as a result of its adoption. The 113-acre Kapra Lake has shrunk in size over the last 20 years as a result of numerous encroachments; at the moment, the lake is almost dry with many damaged inlets. Phytoremediation is the way forward to revitalize the lake. This technique will be used at the lake by the Kapra Revival team, in coordination with GHMC and the Irrigation Department. GHMC will provide technical support for this project.

The Kapra Revival team’s co-founder, Deepa Shailender said, “Kapra Lake, situated in a catchment area, used to receive rainwater.” However, the lake’s entrance has been plugged, prohibiting the release of sewage water, as a result of the development of massive structures in the surrounding districts. In order to resolve this problem and revitalize the lake, the phytoremediation technique will be used. In order to safeguard the lake, we now want to collaborate with GHMC.

“A vendor and I will collaborate to carry out the project. Sanikipuri is on the verge of drying out, and the bore wells are already empty since the lake’s water levels are dropping. This is cause for alarm. It is our duty to safeguard our lake by taking severe action. We are already contacting other organizations to ask for help in the resurrection process,” she said. “It would be advantageous if GHMC built a sewage treatment plant in addition to using the phytoremediation method to ensure complete treatment of all waste water,” a Kapra local said.
