Alcaraz canters into the quarters as Miami opens

Carlos Alcaraz, the winner of Indian Wells, advanced to the Miami Open quarterfinals for the third consecutive year on Tuesday with a 6-3 victory against Lorenzo Musetti, keeping his dreams of a Sunshine Double alive. The Spaniard, who pounded forehands and won 18 of 22 points when he stormed to the net, defeated the 23rd seed from Italy in less than 90 minutes.

After winning his tenth straight game, Alcaraz, who had battled with an ankle issue earlier in the season, said, “Without a doubt, this is the best I’ve been feeling.”

Alcaraz’s comeback in the game will continue when he takes on 11th seed Grigor Dimitrov after the Bulgarian defeated Hubert Hurkacz of Poland 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).

Daniil Medvedev, the third seed from Russia, advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Dominik Koepfer of Germany 7-6(5) 6-0. This was another step towards retaining a championship for the first time in his career.

Rybakina endures

After a tough quarterfinal match against Maria Sakkari, Elena Rybakina defeated the former Wimbledon champion 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4 to make it to the last four for the second consecutive year. It took Rybakina over three hours to defeat Sakkari and advance to the final, where she will compete against Victoria Azarenka. Before defeating Yulia Putintseva 7-6(4) 1-6 6-3 earlier in the day, former world No. 1 Azarenka battled through a nearly hour-long halt in the first set due to a power outage to the automated line-calling system.
