Colombia defeated Germany in a friendly international game

Luis Diaz and Juan Cuadrado scored goals in the second half to help Colombia defeat a lacklustre Germany 2-0 in a friendly match.

Hansi Flick’s team needed a win to enter the summer vacation on a high note after two straight losses, but it was the South American guests who grabbed control, according to Xinhua.

Rafael Santos Borre’s errant header brought Germany custodian Marc-Andre ter Stegen into action nine minutes after Yerry Mina’s near miss in the 14th minute.

Malick Thiaw’s last-ditch tackle at the halfway point prevented Diaz from getting a free chance, proving that Germany was unable to contain the visitors. Moments later, Ter Stegen, who was still active, tipped Mina’s attempt over the bar.

When Camilo Vargas of Colombia stopped Kai Havertz’s shot in the final seconds of the first half, Germany showed some life.

In the 54th minute, the Cafeteros picked up where they left off and scored their first goal thanks to a precise cross from Cuadrado that Diaz headed in from close range.

The hosts were unable to answer, but Colombia kept up the pressure and, at the hour mark, Jhon Arias fired another threatening attempt.

In the last seconds, Colombia made it 2-0 and breached Germany’s defence when Cuadrado converted a penalty in the 82nd minute due to Joshua Kimmich’s handball.

“Of course, the team’s failure to carry out our plan has left me feeling really unhappy. For the fans, I’m sorry. We attempted to test various things here and there, but it failed. We need to study the findings since they are not in our favour. In September, we must provide another performance on the field, according to Germany’s head coach Hansi Flick.

“Of course, this is a frustrating outcome for us, particularly when we consider our past three games. We didn’t measure up, but I also believe that we are lacking in quality. With all due respect, I believe a few players won’t make it to Euro 2024,” remarked Rudi Voller, the sports director for Germany.

The next two friendlies for Germany are against Japan on September 9 and France at home three days later.
