Following his hiring by Salernitana, Filippo Inzaghi is back coaching in Serie A

Filippo Inzaghi, a World Cup champion forward, has returned to coaching in Serie A after being appointed by Salernitana on Tuesday.

Paulo Sousa was sacked by Salernitana, and Simone Inzaghi, the elder brother of Inter Milan’s head coach, took his position.

Salernitana suffered its third consecutive loss without scoring on Sunday against Monza, losing 3-0. It ranks barely above bottom club Cagliari with three points from three draws in eight games.

After the break for international play, Inzaghi will face Cagliari in his first game in command.

Since leaving Reggina in the winter after the team was kicked out of Serie B due to financial issues, the 50-year-old Inzaghi has been unemployed. Last season, he had guided them into the promotion playoffs.

Inzaghi’s last season as a head coach in the Italian top division was the 2020–21 campaign. With Benevento, the team he had guided to promotion the year before, Inzaghi was unable to prevent relegation and departed at the conclusion of the season.

After being promoted from youth team coach to manager in 2014, Inzaghi began his managing career with AC Milan but was let go at the conclusion of the campaign. Additionally, he has coached Brescia, Bologna, and Venezia.

Inzaghi played for Milan for 11 years, earning two Serie A championships (to go along with the one he already had at Juventus) and two Champions League medals. In 2006, he and Italy won the World Cup as well.
