Gerardo Martino claims that Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami move is not a vacation

According to Gerardo Martino, the team’s recently hired head coach, Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets are joining Inter Miami to compete, not for a vacation.

In his first news conference on Thursday, Martino said that he had talked with Messi and Busquets about moving to Miami in order to succeed.

He said, “This happens to us even on a personal level; sometimes we associate the United States, Miami, holidays – this isn’t that.” They are not professional football players that are coming here to not compete, therefore we want to compete.

Martino said that even before Messi and Busquets made their intentions known, he began discussions with the David Beckham-owned team.

He took Phil Neville’s position when the former Manchester United defender was fired after a disastrous stretch of 10 losses and five victories dropped them to last place in the Eastern Conference.

“I’ve always thought this prospect was appealing… Let’s just say that the gifts followed,” remarked Martino.

“I think MLS is constantly changing, and great American soccer players playing for excellent European soccer teams are examples of that,” said the author.

On July 21, Miami will play Mexican team Cruz Azul in a Leagues Cup match, and Messi is anticipated to make his debut.
