In a Test series against England, Yashasvi Jaiswal ties Virat Kohli for most runs scored

Day four of the fourth Test of the five-match series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Monday saw Yashasvi Jaiswal tie Virat Kohli for the most runs by an Indian in a series against England.

After James Anderson completed an incredible catch off Joe Root, Jaiswal was removed for 1 ball 44 balls 37. His series total was 655, matching that of Kohli, who scored the same amount of runs in 2016.

Jaiswal has joined an elite group of Indian greats that includes Sunil Gavaskar (1971, 1978), Virat Kohli (2014, 2016, 2017), Rahul Dravid (2002), Dilip Sardesai (1971), and Jaiswal himself. Jaiswal is actually the fifth batter from India to score 600 or more runs in a Test series.

Jaiswal showed off his daring stroke play on the second day of the Ranchi Test, smashing Virender Sehwag’s record for the most Test sixes by an Indian batsman in a calendar year. In only five matches in 2024, he scored an astounding 23 sixes. His average of 69.36 puts him only 29 runs short of the coveted 1000-run mark in Test cricket. He has scored 971 runs.

Jaiswal also joins the exclusive ranks of cricket greats like Neil Harvey, Graeme Smith, George Headley, Sir Don Bradman, and Sir Garfield Sobers, all of whom have scored more than 600 runs in a Test series before turning 23.

Just 156 runs separate Jaiswal from putting his name in cricket history, and he has the tantalising potential of breaking Gavaskar’s iconic mark of 774 runs against the West Indies in 1971. Australian batting great Donald Bradman, who amassed 974 runs at 139.14 in five Test matches against England in 1930, holds the world record for most runs in a Test series.

Akaay, Virat Kohli’s second kid, was just born, and the actor and his wife Anushka Sharma celebrated the occasion. After dating for a while, Kohli and Anushka tied the knot in 2017. Their daughter Vamika was born in January 2021.
