In cricket, what is blocking the field? Why was Mushfiqur Rahim distributed in a peculiar manner

These days, Mushfiqur Rahim is the talk of the town due to his surprising expulsion from the Bangladesh vs. New Zealand Test match. On the first day of the test, he was sent out for obstructing the field during the second session. Rahim attempted to block the ball with his hand in the 41st over of the game. The Kiwi players, predictably, protested, but the umpires gave them out.

It’s interesting to note that his form of dismissal was “obstructing the field” rather than “handling the ball.” For those who are unaware, “handling the ball” was one of the 11 cricket dismissal modes; however, in 2017, it was included in the “obstructing the field” category. Rahim has been determined in this manner as a result. However, in the history of international cricket, 11 players—including Rahim—have been out while holding the ball.

The batter will be declared out if he or she deliberately tries to defend their wicket, under MCC cricket guidelines. “The striker is out obstructing the field if, with the exception of 37.2, he or she intentionally hits the ball with a hand that is not gripping the bat while receiving a delivery from the bowler. This will be true regardless of whether it is the first, second, or third strike. According to the legislation, “playing at the ball and striking the ball more than once in defense of his or her wicket shall be considered acts of receiving the ball.”
