Lionel Messi Discusses His Retirement Plan and Says He Won’t Consider His Age

In New Delhi, legendary player Lionel Messi spoke about his decision to retire. The legendary football player declares that he would not let age influence his choice to retire from competition. Argentina, spearheaded by Lionel Messi, defeated France in the finals to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The 36-year-old said that he would end his professional career only if he felt he could no longer make a difference or no longer enjoy the game.

In an interview with the Big Time podcast that was released on Wednesday, Messi said, “I know that the moment I feel that I am no longer performing, that I am no longer enjoying it or helping my teammates [I will retire],” according to Xinhua.

“I am rather critical of myself. I am aware of my strengths and weaknesses, as well as when I am playing well and badly. I won’t let my age stop me when I decide it’s time to make that move.

“I will attempt to continue competing if I feel well because it is what I enjoy and am proficient in.”

During a July interview that aired on Argentine television, Messi said, “It makes sense that [retirement] won’t be far away because of my age.”

However, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner now seems less convinced about the potential length of his career.

“I haven’t given it much consideration yet. I make an effort to live in the now and not worry about the future. As of now, nothing is apparent to me,” the Inter Miami attacker said.

Since I like playing, I want to go on for a bit more. When the time comes, I’ll undoubtedly find a new career and the road to what makes me happy and fulfilled.

Messi joined Inter Miami on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in July of last year, and in 19 games, he has 16 goals and 7 assists.
