Rafael Nadal Drops Out of the ATP Indian Wells Rematch

On the eve of his first match in California, Rafael Nadal called off his intended ATP Tour return at the Indian Wells Masters on Wednesday, citing his lack of preparation for the demands of tournament tennis.

Four days before the stunning decision, the 37-year-old Spanish legend had lost a Las Vegas exhibition against fellow countryman and world number two Carlos Alcaraz.

Due to abdominal and other problems, Nadal missed almost the whole 2023 season. This season, he has only participated in the Brisbane International, where he had a hip injury flare-up.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner was supposed to play Canadian Milos Raonic, a previous Wimbledon finalist, in the first round at Indian Wells on Thursday.

In a statement, Rafael Nadal stated, “I have to withdraw from this amazing tournament at Indian Wells with great sadness.”

“I’ve been putting in a lot of effort. However, I don’t think I’m prepared to perform at my best at such a significant occasion.

“I can’t lie to the thousands of admirers and to myself—it’s not a simple decision—in fact, it’s a difficult one.

“I know the tournament will be a huge success, and I will miss you all.”

Tommy Haas, the director of the Indian Wells event, expressed regret at Nadal’s withdrawal.

“We hope he can return to action soon and wish him continued healing,” Haas said. “We hope to see him back in Indian Wells again in the future. He is one of the all-time fan favorites here.”

Nadal produced a solid showing in his match against Alcaraz on Sunday in Las Vegas.

Following a strained muscle in Brisbane around the beginning of January, Rafael Nadal pulled out of the Australian Open, the season’s first Grand Slam.

Then, declaring he was “not ready to compete,” he abandoned intentions to make a comeback at the Qatar Open in February.
