WTC Final: Shubman Gill Punished For Questioning Umpire, 100% Match Fee Loss for Indian Players

Shubman Gill received an extra 15% of his match fee for challenging the umpire’s decision to deem him out in a controversial ruling during the World Test Championship final. Indian players have been penalised their whole match money for continuing to maintain a sluggish over pace.

In addition, the Australian players were penalised 80% of their costs for having a sluggish over rate during the marquee match, which they won in London on Sunday by a score of 209 runs.

India will forfeit the whole of their match money due to their sluggish over rate, while Australia will also forfeit 80% of their match fees, it was announced immediately after the match on Sunday’s final day.

The ICC stated in a statement on Monday that players are penalised 20% of their match fee for each over their team fails to bowl in the permitted time, in line with Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

The penalties were applied when it was determined that Australia was four overs short of the goal and India was five overs short after time allowances were taken into account.

The playing XI of Indian players receives a salary of Rs 15 lakh every Test, while the reserve players get a salary of Rs 7.5 lakh apiece.

Gill was adjudicated guilty of “breaching article 2.7, which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.”

Cameron Green’s catch to dismiss Gill during India’s second innings, according to television umpire Richard Kettleborough, was ruled to have been taken cleanly.

However, after the game, the kid had shared a TV screen capture of the replay in which it seemed like the ball had touched the ground.

India’s dismal performance saw them lose seven wickets before noon on the fifth and final day of play on Sunday while chasing a huge 444 in the second innings.
