A man in Delhi Receives New Hands Following a Record 12-Hour Transplant Procedure

A Delhi painter who sadly lost both of his hands in a rail accident back in 2020 had a historic double hand transplant operation at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital recently, marking a pioneering medical feat. This 12-hour surgery, which was the first of its sort in the nation’s capital, was accomplished with great significance under the direction of Drs. Mahesh Mangal and Nikhil Jhunjhunwala.

The donor family, Meena Mehta’s, was very kind in enabling this incredible achievement. Before her untimely death, Meena, who had been the head of administration at an exclusive school in South Delhi, had generously promised to give her organs. She had a hemorrhage in her brain. Three additional lives were spared by her kind contribution.

Dr. Jhanjhunwala reportedly said, “There is a lot of improvement in the man’s hands after the surgery,” according to ETV Bharat. The elbow may be used as well. It has further enhancements as well. The hand’s blood circulation is operating normally. The man’s hands were reportedly severed somewhat below the thumb on one hand and just above the thumb on the other, owing to the accident. To treat these injuries, surgical operations were carried out while the patient was receiving care in the hospital. He said, “We linked both hands from underneath the closed region during surgery.

“The arms found were extended above the elbow of the donor and attached to the youth,” said Dr. Nikhil Jhunjhunwala. One by one, arteries, stones, and hand knots were joined. Following a successful operation, the patient will be released from the hospital on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Tomorrow, the patient’s relatives will arrive to welcome him.

In October 2020, the 45-year-old man was involved in a terrifying train accident that resulted in the loss of both his arms, as reported by Zee News. He received treatment at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after the event, where he was equipped with prosthetic arms. Still, returning to full functioning was quite difficult for him. In the meantime, Meena Mehta had a horrible demise and was declared brain dead in 2021. Her request to donate her organs was granted by her family.

Transplanting organs is one of the most amazing developments in contemporary medicine. It offers many people with life-threatening illnesses or organ failure a ray of hope and another shot at life.
