“I use proper grammar”: The anchor declines to use the non-binary pronoun of the visitor while broadcasting live

A social media user is harshly criticizing an anchor for declining to use a guest’s non-binary pronouns during a live broadcast. On social media, a video of TalkTV presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer speaking with journalist Shivani Dave has gone viral.

Dave and Brewer were going to talk about the CASS Review, which is an impartial study of gender services for kids and teens. However, Brewer referred to Dave as “she,” which caused the discussion to take an unexpected turn.

The host declines to use a non-binary pronoun for the visitor

Shivani Dave will be my next visitor. She works for Virgin Radio as a broadcaster and journalist, according to Brewer.

Brewer was corrected by non-binary transgender person Dave, who said, “Good afternoon, Julia. My pronouns are they/them, as you are aware.

Dave was commended by Brewer for using their pronouns correctly, but she was told to use “correct grammar.” She went on, “I’m not being impolite. What you choose to name yourself is up to you. However, you don’t have the right to demand that I use bad language and false information.

It was said by the anchor, “You’re not plural. You are a female individual, and you are one person. I will therefore refer to her and “she,” thank you very much.

In response, Dave said, “I guess do what you like.” They went on to say that if viewers want to address them “respectfully,” they should use the appropriate pronouns.

“Is it disrespectful for me to use correct, factual grammar?” Brewer questioned in response.

Dave retorted that using the singular they/them pronouns for a person was neither wrong nor unfactual. Then they requested to return to the subject of the chat show.

Brewer said, “Yeah, but you chose to bring it up,” nonetheless.

Dave restated that Brewer referred to them incorrectly. “I choose to use the correct pronouns for a single woman who is appearing on my show,” Brewer said.

“I am not a single woman,” said Dave. Despite being a non-binary trans person who is “very special,”

People who have “all these labels” want to be “special,” Brewer said, just before Dave jumped in.

Alright. I’m not unique. I’m simply an elderly married heterosexual boring lady. However, I apologize for it. That’s no longer acceptable for us to do,” Brewer said.

Netizens furious
The video has gone viral on social media, infuriating online users.

“Heartless trouble brewer 0- Shivani Dave 1.” commented one user. “Bruh, what’s factual about grammar?” inquired another. Another user said, “It really pissed me off.”

“This anchor is all kinds of cringe,” someone said. “They handled the situation really well, such a shame to be treated so rudely,” said a fifth user. I’m not sure how the anchor lady completes her task if she is unable to treat others with respect.

Another said, “It’s so disgusting.” Using they/them pronouns for a single individual is not that difficult. When we are unsure about someone’s gender, we often act in this way.
