Simpsons Author Explains How They Can Forecast Actual Events

The famous cartoon series The Simpsons has been surprising viewers with its ability to foresee current events for more than 30 years. The show’s forecasts have always drawn criticism, from Apple’s Vision Pro and the emergence of smartwatches to Donald Trump winning the presidency of the United States. The most recent forecast to come true was that the London Symphony Orchestra and the famed rap group Cypress Hill would perform together on stage. This prediction was first made in the 1996 episode Homerpalooza. One of the authors, Al Jean, said that their success was due to chance and the sheer number of episodes they created. Jean explains why he thinks The Simpsons can still correctly anticipate future events in an interview with NME.

As he put it, “If you write 700 episodes and you don’t predict anything, then you’re pretty bad,” observed one of our writers, the person whose episode had a prediction of Donald Trump winning the presidency. Throw enough darts, and you will hit some bullseyes. The 9/11 one is very strange. There was a pamphlet in the World Trade Center episode that said $9 a day and had an 11 that looked like the towers. That occurred in 1996, and at the time, it seemed like a strange coincidence. It’s basically just informed guesswork, however. Zoom and iPads are included in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, but only because he enlisted the aid of futurologists to help him imagine what the world may look like in 30 years.

Members of Cypress Hill, B-Real, Sen Dog, and Eric Bobo, recently made news when they announced they would be working together with conductor Troy Miller and the London Symphony Orchestra. The group praised The Simpsons in a statement for providing them with inspiration for their own production.

According to the statement, The Simpsons hilariously featured Cypress Hill obtaining an engagement with the London Symphony Orchestra by accident in a 1996 episode titled Homerpalooza. The members of the group reached out to the LSO via social media, after years of fans’ dreams of this partnership. At last, Cypress Hill’s long-awaited ambition of performing with the esteemed London Symphony Orchestra will come true. The orchestra, led by Troy Miller, will perform hits including I Wanna Get High and Insane in the Brain.

The writers of The Simpsons have previously correctly predicted a number of events, including the conclusion of Game of Thrones, Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, autocorrect, the Horsemeat scandal, a letter from The Beatles, three-eyed fish, Ebola, and the COVID outbreak. They have also correctly predicted the release of Vision Pro, smartwatches, and Donald Trump as president.
