As CMD of BHEL, Koppu Sadashiv Murthy assumes leadership

On Wednesday, Koppu Sadashiv Murthy, 56, took over as chairman and managing director of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a public sector engineering and manufacturing company, after his nomination.

Previously, Murthy held the position of executive director for BHEL’s Corporate Operations Management division. In addition, he was Bharat Pumps and Compressors Limited’s (BPCL) chairman and managing director at the same time.

After earning an MBA in finance and a degree in electrical engineering from Bhopal University, Murthy began working for BHEL in 1989 at the company’s Jhansi manufacturing facility, which produced transformers and locomotives.

He gained extensive expertise in strategic, operational, project, and commercial management throughout the course of his 34 years at BHEL’s Corporate Office and at several production facilities in Hyderabad, Bhopal, Jhansi, and Varanasi.

Throughout his career, Koppu Sadashiv Murthy has shown a great capacity to reliably generate income and profitability while also using excellent resource optimization. As Delhi’s head of corporate operations management, he was instrumental in establishing a project-centric culture and helping the business earn a profit in FY22–23 & FY21–22 after two years of losses.

He oversaw all facets of the Varanasi manufacturing unit’s portfolio while leading BHEL. In spite of the difficulties brought on by the factory’s partial closure or lockdown during the COVID pandemic, the unit produced outstanding results in FY20–21, including a profit before taxes of more than 25% of revenue, a record-low inventory level, and a cash surplus.

In his capacity as Chief Management Officer of BPCL, his outstanding abilities to cultivate strong stakeholder connections resulted in mutually beneficial results such as the successful sale of assets for Rs. 80 crore and the settlement of outstanding payments and contractual disputes with suppliers, contractors, and consumers.

Murthy sees a future in which BHEL leads the industry in producing top-notch machinery, guarantees timely EPC completion, and significantly contributes to the development of India. The organization will achieve higher heights in the next years due to his skill as an experienced team leader and his ability to channel varied ideas towards shared aims.
