EU to Facebook, Google, and TikTok: Specify how you will address the dangers associated with generative AI

EU authorities have requested information from digital behemoths like Google, Facebook, and TikTok on how they are handling threats posed by generative AI, such as the emergence of deepfakes.
Eight platforms and search engines, including Microsoft’s Bing, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and X, the old Twitter, are reportedly being questioned by the European Commission about how they are reducing the dangers associated with technology.

In addition to deepfakes, the commission is looking for evidence on additional concerns associated with AI, such as systems producing misleading information (sometimes referred to as “hallucinations”) and automated service modifications intended to deceive voters.
What data are the authorities looking for?
According to the commission, data about the production and distribution of generative AI material has been sought. Internal company records detail risk assessments and mitigation efforts, for instance.
The deadline for responses from the EU on its election safeguards is April 5; for responses on other subjects, it is April 26. The commission could conduct a more thorough examination later on.
In the meantime, the commission requested information from LinkedIn on its adherence to the DSA’s prohibition on targeting advertisements based on sensitive personal information such as as political viewpoints, race, and sexual orientation.
This development occurs one week after a set of laws known as the Digital Services Act (DSA) went into effect with the intention of fostering more healthy competition in the area. The AI Act was also adopted by lawmakers in the area, although the parts pertaining to generative AI won’t take effect until the following year, according to the news agency AP.
Chinese e-commerce site AliExpress was recently investigated by DSA as well. The business declared that it complies with all laws and ordinances in the markets in which it does business.
