The enterprise value of IPL exceeds $15 billion

The IPL Brand Valuation Study 2023, the first analysis from the international investment bank Houlihan Lokey, Inc., examines the commercial enterprise and brand values of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Chennai Super Kings are placed first in both the brand ranking and the business enterprise value ranking, with a brand worth of $212 million that is increasing year over year at a rate of 45.2%.

At $195 million, Royal Challengers Bangalore comes in second in terms of brand value.

Rajasthan Royals saw the largest incremental brand value growth—103%—in terms of percentage year over year.

The research states that the IPL’s stand-alone brand value has increased to $3.2 billion from $1.8 billion in 2022, an increase of 80%.

The 2023–2027 television rights contract with Viacom18 and Disney Star following a hotly fought auction has increased the commercial enterprise value of the IPL by 80% to $15.4 billion from $8.5 billion in 2022.

Media rights for the IPL have increased at an astounding CAGR of 18% between 2008 and 2023, while the rise in absolute terms between the 2017 and 2023 cycles is 196.0%.

The IPL performs far better than the National Basketball Association (NBA), the English Premier League (EPL), and the Bundesliga in terms of broadcasting fees when compared on a per-match basis with other professional leagues around the world, coming in second only to the National Football League (NFL).

According to Harsh Talikoti, Senior Vice President, Corporate Valuation Advisory Services at Houlihan Lokey, “The IPL has established itself as a hugely lucrative sports league, along the lines of the NFL and the NBA. It was created on the American style of franchise-based systems of hiring players.”
