When Sam Altman met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he made the following remarks on AI in India.

The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, said that he recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the nation’s capital. During their conversation, Altman praised India’s impressive tech industry and discussed how the nation might use artificial intelligence. Altman enthusiastically described his interactions with different members of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Altman said at a conference that GPT5, the organization’s replacement for GPT4, is not presently being trained by ChatGPT. Altman noted that there is still a long way to go until GPT5 is developed and that there is a lot of work to be done before then.

Altman said that his team is now concentrating on creating new ideas needed for GPT5, although he emphasized that they are still a long way from starting its development. He emphasized the need of carrying out further safety assessments and said he was unable to provide a definite date for the publication of the next GPT.

These statements from Altman reflect the rising anxiety among AI academics and industry executives about the rapid development of AI technology. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and Twitter, and Steve Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple, among other well-known individuals, issued an open letter in March encouraging AI laboratories to temporarily stop training AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for a least of six months.

Altman admitted that while the open letter lacked technical detail, OpenAI has not started training for GPT-5 and had no imminent intentions to do so. This was in response to the open letter signed by more than 1,100 international AI experts and CEOs asking for a freeze in “all giant AI experiments.”

Altman also acknowledged that if generative AI technology fails, there may be serious repercussions during his testimony in May at a US Senate committee in Washington, D.C.

US Senators had just voiced their worries about AI chatbots like ChatGPT when this comment was made. Due to the growing influence of AI, Altman stressed the necessity for government control in this sector.
