On the occasion of Rajinikanth and Vijayakanth’s joint appearance in Manathil Uruthi Vendum

After making his screen debut in 1979, veteran actor Vijayakanth went on to create a lasting impression in the 1980s and 1990s with his flicks. He was close to superstar Rajinikanth, with whom he only worked on one movie together, Manathil Uruthi Vendum, despite their several collaborations.

Rajinikanth and Vijayakanth worked together on the well-known song Vangaala Kadale from Manathil Uruthi Vendum throughout the course of their four-decade careers. Their legendary cameo in the song, which features lead actress Suhasini Mani Ratnam, has remained popular with viewers up to this day.

Manathil Uruthi Vendum is a 1987 Tamil drama film directed by K Balachander. Ilayaraja created the music and Rajam produced the film, which stars Suhasini Mani Ratnam and Vivek in major parts among an ensemble cast. The narrative centers on Suhasini’s character, a divorced nurse who ends up supporting her huge family on her own. A new chapter in her life begins with her meeting a supportive author.

Unfortunately, Vijayakanth died in December 2023 at the age of 71 from complications related to COVID-19. Rajinikanth was shooting his forthcoming flick Vettaiyan when he passed away. After learning of the news, Rajinikanth called off the filming and hurried to Chennai to attend Vijayakanth’s burial to give the renowned actor his last respects.

At Tuticorin airport, Rajinikanth expressed his sorrow to the media while commending Vijayakanth’s tenacity, saying, “My heart aches.” Vijayakanth was a guy of strong will. When I last saw him, it was during the DMDK general body meeting, and I had hoped that he would get well. The people of Tamil Nadu are deeply saddened by his departure.”

Vijayakanth has made a huge impact on the Tamil cinema industry with his remarkable performances and unwavering devotion, which have won him recognition and respect from all quarters. Even though they didn’t work together much, his friendship with Rajinikanth is still a treasured part of Tamil film history and serves as an example of the solidarity and respect that performers in the business have for one another.
