The Reasons Behind the Success of Malayalam Movies Outside Kerala, Such as Manjummel Boys and Premalu

The Malayalam film industry got off to a great start in 2024. Abraham Ozler was launched in January, and both reviewers and spectators praised it much when it first came out. In the Midhun Manuel Thomas-directed film, Mammootty had a little part while Jayaram, Anaswara Rajan, and Arya Salim had important roles.

The film became an enormous smash after earning over Rs 20 crore at the Kerala box office in only 16 days of its release. Abraham Ozler emerged as 2024’s first financially successful Malayalam film. With the release of films like Premalu, Manjummel Boys, and Bramayugam recently, it seems that Malayalam cinema is starting to draw large audiences.

February 9 saw the release of Premalu. Actors Naslen K. Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju are in this Hyderabad-based romance drama directed by Girish AD. When the film debuted, audiences praised it for its great plot, moving soundtrack, comedic moments, and the cast’s outstanding performances. This low-budget film made almost Rs 50 crore in its first week of release globally, making it the highest-grossing Malayalam film of 2024. The decision to have the movie dubbed into Telugu was made by the creators due to the film’s immense success among Telugu moviegoers. As a result, the film’s rights were acquired by SS Karthikeya, the son of renowned filmmaker SS Rajamouli.

Bramayugam, a horror thriller, is another Malayalam film that captured the hearts of viewers on February 15. Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan, and Amalda Liz appear in it, which is directed by Rahul Sadasivan. Attendees of film have been swarming the theaters to see this terrifying scenario unfold on the big screen. Sithara Entertainments plans to distribute the Telugu version of the film in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Now, Manjummel Boys was made available on February 22. This is a survival drama based on actual events that happened in the caverns of Kodaikanal Guna. Due to its association with Kamal Haasan’s 1991 film Gunaa and the inclusion of the well-known song Kanmani Anbodu Valanthan, the film also attracted Tamil fans.

Premalu and Manjummel Boys are reportedly predicted to surpass the Rs 100 crore milestone. Prior to this, Lucifer has earned more than Rs 100 crore in Pulimurugan (2018) and 2019 respectively. This demonstrates that Malayalam film is creating engaging material that audiences outside Kerala are enjoying.
