According to the UN, 78 crore people suffer from chronic hunger while 19% of food is wasted worldwide

According to recent United Nations research, the globe lost an estimated 1.05 billion (100 crore) metric tonnes, or 19% of the food produced worldwide, in 2022. The Food Waste Index Report, released on Wednesday by the UN Environment Programme, monitors nations’ progress towards halving food waste by 2030.

According to the UN, since the index’s first release in 2021, the number of nations participating has almost doubled. According to the 2021 study, 931 million, or 17%, of the food produced worldwide in 2019 was produced.

(93.1 crore) metric tonnes were squandered; however, the authors cautioned against making direct comparisons due to insufficient data from several nations.

Researchers examined national data pertaining to food service, merchants, and homes. They discovered that the average individual wastes 79 kg of food a year, which translates to at least 1 billion meals wasted every day globally.

The study is released at a time when 78.3 million people worldwide suffer from chronic hunger, and many regions are experiencing worsening food crises. The situation has become worse due to the Israel-Hamas conflict and the unrest in Haiti; analysts predict that starvation will soon strike northern Gaza. — AP
