After being stabbed in an Indiana gym, an Indian student is critically ill

According to those acquainted with his care, the 24-year-old Indian student who was stabbed at a fitness facility in the US state of Indiana is still critically ill and is on life support, as PTI reported.

At a public gym on Sunday morning, P. Varun Raj, a student studying computer science, was stabbed in the temple by Jordan Andrade, a 24-year-old attacker. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the occurrence. Varun is still in critical condition and needs life support after three days of therapy due to significant neurological damage. He is probably going to be permanently disabled, with weakness on one side of his body and maybe even whole or partial blindness.

Following the assault, Jordan Andrade, the 24-year-old attacker, was taken into custody and is now being charged with attempted murder and aggravated violence with a dangerous weapon. Varun has been sent to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne because of the severity of his wounds. Meanwhile, Andrade entered a not guilty plea to Level 1 and Level 3 felony charges when he appeared before Porter Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Clymer. His bail was ordered by the court at USD 500,000 in cash and USD 500,000 in surety.

Andrade reportedly said that he could pay a bail for $300,000. Andrade was declared a flight risk by the court. The head of the institution voiced his dismay at the vicious assault on one of its pupils. The assault on Varun Raj has surprised and saddened us. We at Valparaiso University see one another as family, thus we are all horrified by this happened. The university’s president, José Padilla, sent a statement to the Post-Tribune on Wednesday that said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with all of his friends and family.”

“The University and Valpo Community are offering all assistance and resources available to help Varun’s family get to the United States as quickly as possible, in addition to our thoughts and prayers,” Michael Fenton said in an email to the Chicago Tribune. Through a GoFund campaign, the North American Telugu Society (NATS) had collected over $38,000 as of Wednesday night.

He is now fighting for his life in a coma and in serious condition, and his family is going through a very trying time with a lot of uncertainty and expensive medical expenditures. With broken hearts, the family reached out to us, requesting that we help pay for his enormous medical bills as well as his parents’ airfare to the United States, according to NATS.
