Firefighters at a Swedish amusement park battle to contain the fire, as one person remains missing

More than twenty-four hours after it started, Swedish emergency services said on Tuesday that they were still fighting a significant fire at the biggest theme park in the nation.

After the fire broke out on Monday at the Oceana water park, which was still under construction at the Liseberg amusement park in the western city of Gothenburg, one person was still missing.

A Gothenburg emergency services official told the SVT television station that while firefighters had earlier on Tuesday said the fire was under control, it flared up again in the evening.

“We have alerted new units and the fire has resumed.” It was promptly found while we were there, the official said, stressing that there was no chance of it spreading.

Rescue services had previously issued a warning that the possibility of a structure collapse was impeding attempts to extinguish the fire entirely.

The missing individual was still nowhere to be found.

“We have looked through the areas we can reach and believe to be secure. According to Per Nyqvist of the Gothenburg rescue services, “(and) we have not been able to find anyone.”

According to Nyqvist, the fire most likely started in one of the outside water features before spreading “throughout the building.”

Images from Monday showed fireballs bursting, a water slide being destroyed by flames and several explosions, and a veil of black smoke rising over the city.

The head of building operations at NCC, a construction business, Niklas Sparw, said on Tuesday that it was premature to make assumptions about the fire’s origin.

Sparw told reporters, “We need a proper investigation before we speculate on what happened, with respect to the fact that it is an exceptional event.”

Authorities said that they had launched an inquiry into workplace offenses and egregious carelessness.

Police said that 16 individuals sought medical attention for minor wounds, but none required hospital admission.
