Russia targets the electrical grid in Ukraine

According to authorities on Friday, Russia targeted several electrical power plants in Ukraine, including the biggest hydroelectric facility in the nation, resulting in extensive blackouts and the deaths of at least three individuals.

The drone and missile strikes throughout the night were described by German Galushchenko, the minister of energy, as “the largest attack on the Ukrainian energy sector in recent times.” The objective is not just to do harm, but also to make another attempt—as it was the previous year—to seriously disrupt the nation’s energy supply.

The biggest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, receives its energy from the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station, which caught fire as a result of the strikes.

Rafael Grossi, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said early on Friday that the plant’s primary 750 kilovolt power connection had been severed. A backup line with less power was operational.

Due to the possibility of a nuclear disaster, fighting surrounding the facility, which is seized by Russian soldiers, has raised concerns.
