Southeast Asia regional director of WHO will be nominated by daughter of Bangladesh’s prime minister

Saima Wazed, a specialist in mental health, is the daughter of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and has been nominated to become the next regional head of the World Health Organization’s South-East Asia area.

The other contender was senior WHO official Dr. Shambhu Prasad Acharya. Nepal had nominated him.

During a closed meeting during the 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the South-East Asia Region, the member states decided to recommend Wazed for the position.

According to a statement from the global health organization, the nomination will be presented to the WHO Executive Board at its 154th session, which will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from January 22 to 27.

Set to enter office on February 1, 2024, is Wazed.
