The UK will make it illegal to create sexually explicit deepfakes

The UK government said on Tuesday that it would enact laws making the production of “deepfake” photos that are sexually explicit illegal.

According to the authorities, anybody found guilty of taking false sexual photos of individuals without their permission might wind up with a criminal record, an endless fine, or even go to prison if the photo is disseminated extensively.

Minister for Victims and Safeguarding Laura Farris remarked, “It is another example of ways in which certain people seek to degrade and dehumanize others – especially women.”

If the information is disseminated more broadly, it might have disastrous effects. This administration will not put up with it.

“This new offense makes it very evident that creating such content is wrong, frequently misogynistic, and illegal,” she said.

The Criminal Justice Bill, which is now passing through parliament, will be amended to include the new offense.

The statement was greeted with enthusiasm by Yvette Cooper, the opposition Labour Party’s shadow interior minister.

“Putting someone’s picture over sexually explicit images and videos is a flagrant invasion of their privacy and autonomy, which can have devastating consequences and should never be allowed,” the speaker said.
