Programs in Computer Applications and Management Will Be Under AICTE

Delhi, New: A notice on the addition of Computer and Management programs under the jurisdiction of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has been issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Currently, the technical body oversees postgraduate programs in computer applications and management as well as engineering and technology courses. The technical body will also supervise the universities that provide computer and management undergraduate programs starting in the next academic year.

“As you are aware, ‘Technical Education’ and its related aspects are controlled and governed by the All India Council for Technical Education Act, 1987,” stated the notice published in the UGC Official Gazette. Technical education is defined as “Programs of education, research and training in Engineering Technology, Architecture, Town Planning, Management, Pharmacy and Applied Arts and Crafts and such other Program (or) areas as the Central Government may, in consultation with the Council,” according to Section 2(g) of the AICTE Act.

The announcement also said that up till now, the AICTE had sole jurisdiction over postgraduate programs in management (MBA) and computer applications (MCA). In order to preserve consistent quality and academic standards throughout Management and Computer Applications Programs, AICTE has decided to regulate schools providing BBA, BMS, and BCA degrees starting with the next academic year. These regulations are modeled after postgraduate courses and programs (MCA/MBA).

According to the AICTE, benefits offered to approved institutes include free access to e-books in Indian languages through the e-Kumbh Portal, model curricula, faculty development programs, student scholarship schemes, Margdarshan Scheme for Institutions, PARAKH (Performance Analysis and Review for Holistic Development), etc.

In order to ensure compliance, the University Grants Commission has requested that all of its associated schools that now provide or plan to offer BBA, BMS, and BCA programs and courses be informed of the aforementioned information.
