Samba Dashami 2024: Odisha observes the holy festival of Samba Dashami. It is observed on the tenth day of the Shukla Paksha of Pausha Month, or the waxing phase of the moon, in the month of Pausha (December – January), in accordance with the ancient Odia calendar. The majority of people in Odisha celebrate this holiday in the eastern area. The Sun God Surya is said to have cured Lord Krishna’s leprosy-stricken son Samba after he had fasted for 12 years in the Konark region, according to holy Hindu traditions. On this day, mothers offer prayers to Surya in order to protect their children’s health. Samba Dashmi will be observed on January 20, 2024, this year.

Legends Associated With Samba Dashami 2024
There is a legend that claims Samba had psoriasis or leprosy in the past but cured after pleading with Lord Surya. Samba had to undergo 12 years of penance before he was cured. It is said that Samba performed this penance at the famous Sun Temple in Konark, Odisha. In another story, upon his recovery, Samba built Sun Temples in Kashmir, Modhera, and Konark. The fact that Hindus were aware of the sun’s therapeutic qualities thousands of years ago is an interesting remark from the event.
The day Samba was cured is known as Samba Dashami. On this day in particular, mothers do Surya Puja to placate Surya Bhagawan and protect the health of their offspring.
Samba Dashami 2024: Customs Connected To This Hallowed Day
– On “Samba Dashami,” women rise early to make traditional dishes for the Sun God, like the curry Ghadghadia Tarkari and the Indian snack Khichdi. The women prepare many cake-like dishes called as Pitha (cake), which include Biri Laddoo, Chhenaguda, Makar Chaula, Dhanu Muaan, Chhenagaja, Khiri, Rasagola, Jhilli, and Sweet Curd, after presenting the food items to the Surya. Most significantly, a unique delicacy is offered to each youngster.
– At lunchtime, “chaunra mula,” or turmeric water laced with betel root, is served. Each prepared dish is shown on a platter. The ladies of the household offer all of their meals to the Sun God, who they can see through the water bowl filled with turmeric.
– They read the tale of “Samba Dasami Brata Katha” and pray for the safety of the whole family, but particularly for the youngsters living there.
– As part of the “Samba Dasami” ritual, an extra ceremony is held in the evening. A special gift of Budha Chakuli is given to Lord Yama during this “Mahakala Puja.”
