Congress moving slowly on the seats of Haridwar and Nainital

The Congress is having trouble deciding on candidates for the Haridwar and Nainital seats in Uttarakhand.

The identities of the candidates for each of the state’s five seats have not yet been revealed due to internal disputes and unrest within the Uttarakhand Congress. Not even at the upper echelons of the party hierarchy has an agreement been reached on the Nainital and Haridwar seats after prolonged discussions. On April 19, Uttarakhand is expected to cast its first round of general election votes.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already declared their candidates for all five Lok Sabha seats in the state, while the Congress has only nominated its candidates for Tehri, Pauri, and Almora.

Based on information gleaned from close sources inside the Uttarakhand Congress party, Yashpal Arya, the assembly’s Leader of the Opposition, has now recanted his previous declaration that he will run for the Nainital seat. The senior leadership of the party is somewhat alarmed by this development.

According to sources, Arya’s choice could have been affected by a strong amount of pressure from a powerful BJP section. In a same vein, pressure is building against Ganesh Godiyal, the official Congress candidate for the Pauri parliamentary constituency. Notably, Godiyal received a summons from the Maharashtra Income Tax Department for him to appear in person on March 22.

The Congress has not yet chosen who would run for the Haridwar and Nainital seats, while the BJP is getting ready to submit nominations for each of the state’s five seats. The potential of announcing candidates for these seats was discussed at Tuesday’s meeting of the Congress’s Central Election Committee, but the matter was not taken up because of a disagreement.

State leader The state’s senior officials met with Selja Kumari, but a choice about the candidates has not yet been made.
