Delhi-NCR onion prices are skyrocketing, and they can keep rising till December

Onion prices in Delhi and the national capital area have soared to ₹70 per kilogramme, in stark contrast to basic vegetables, which are offered for between ₹30 and ₹50 per kilogramme. The price per kilogramme of onions is likely to surpass ₹100 by the first week of November. In several areas of Punjab and Chandigarh, prices are also soaring.

Customers and vendors alike voiced their displeasure at the unanticipated increase in onion prices after the Navaratri celebrations were over. According to government statistics, the maximum price for onions has climbed to about ₹70 per kilogramme. It is anticipated that this upward trend will continue until December.

Low onion inflow leads to high rates. As of right moment, the pricing per kilogram are Rs. 350. That was yesterday’s Rs. 300. The amount was Rs. 200 before that. A week ago, the charges were Rs. 200, Rs. 160, Rs. 250, etc. The rates have gone up in the last week. One onion dealer claims that prices have gone up due to the paucity of onions.

Onions have become more expensive in a similar way in a number of states, including Karnataka and Maharashtra. The Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Yeshwantpur, Bengaluru, offered onions for ₹65–70 per kilogramme.

Onions are being taken out of the buffer stock in both the wholesale and retail sectors in areas where prices have climbed dramatically, according to the Union Consumer Ministry. Since mid-August, almost 1.7 lakh tons of buffer onions had been offloaded at different locations across 22 states.

“We have been offloading buffer onions since mid-August and we are stepping up the retail sale in order to check further rise in prices and provide relief to the consumers,” according to reports citing Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh.

It is projected that the price will grow over the course of the next month before falling in December.
