EAM Jaishankar and his Malaysian colleague had a “productive, frank discussion.”

In a “productive and frank discussion” on Wednesday, Malaysian counterpart Mohamad bin Haji Hasan and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed matters of mutual concern on both the regional and global stages as well as bilateral relations.

After concluding his trip to Singapore and the Philippines, EAM Jaishankar landed in Malaysia and “exchanged views on the multifaceted dimensions of Malaysia-India bilateral affairs.”

“The two ministers had a productive and frank discussion, including exchanging views on the multifaceted dimensions of Malaysia-India bilateral affairs as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest,” stated the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign ties.

The two leaders also spoke on the high-level visitation exchange and the scheduling of the seventh Joint Commission encounter of Malaysia and India at a mutually convenient date during their first encounter since Hasan assumed office in December 2023.

Zambry Abdul Kadir, the former foreign minister of Malaysia, traveled to India for official business in November 2023 in order to co-chair the sixth India-Malaysia Joint Commission Meeting in New Delhi.

Later today, Dr. Jaishankar is also expected to meet with Gobind Singh Deo, the Minister of Digital, and make a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The two countries have a significant and long-standing connection that is based on strong economic alliances and intimate interpersonal relationships.

India ranked as Malaysia’s 12th biggest trading partner worldwide in 2023, with total trade volume reaching RM 77.76 billion (USD 16.53 billion).
