Experts advise just harvesting wheat crops that are completely matured

Experts in agriculture have encouraged farmers not to harvest their wheat crop until it is completely matured, since a higher moisture content in the grain would make it more difficult for government agencies to get the product.

The maximum amount of moisture that wheat grain may contain is 12 percent. The government agencies would not buy wheat with a moisture content over the threshold.

It is thought that some farmers may attempt to harvest the crop in order to protect it from rain, since light to moderate rains are predicted for the state after April 14. According to the experts, mild to moderate rain will not harm the grain.

The Chief Agricultural Officer, Jatinder Singh Gill, said that around 1.88 lakh hectares had been planted to wheat. The district is anticipated to generate more than nine lakh metric tons in total. Because Punjab has a large number of combine harvesting equipment, the wheat harvesting season lasts for 10 to 15 days.

Although the state’s formal purchase of wheat began on April 1, the harvest has not yet arrived to the district’s grain markets.
