In Kerala, a migrant worker was killed by a suspected mob violence; ten others were detained

Ten people have been taken into custody by police in relation to an alleged mob assault that killed a migrant worker on Thursday night.

Asok Das, 24, was allegedly stopped and tied to a pole by a group of people in Valakom, close to Muvattupuzha, while he was leaving a woman’s home.

Around five o’clock on Thursday evening, Asok, a resident of Bankura, West Bengal, paid the lady and her companion a visit at their leased home.

A month ago, Asok, who was employed at a nearby hotel, departed Valakom. It is thought that the lady was a regular at the hotel where he worked.

A group of around twenty people stopped and interrogated Asok as he was leaving the residence at 9:30 p.m., according to the police. Once he was secured to the pole, he fell. He was sent to a private hospital in Kolenchery after being taken to Muvattupuzha General Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Police in Muvattupuzha initiated an investigation after filing a report of unnatural death. Officers said that the ten people who were placed under arrest were a part of the group that stopped Asok, and they added that they would take additional action after reviewing the postmortem report. On Friday night, the autopsy was performed at Kalamassery Medical College Hospital.

“A preliminary examination found head and lung damage. The locals say that after Asok made a disturbance inside the home, he was observed to be hurt when he left. They said that his confinement was necessary to stop further problems. To find out the reason of death, we are awaiting the whole postmortem report. We’ll investigate the kind of wounds he received. A thorough investigation has been started. We will add the murder charge if the mob assault is verified,” an officer said.

Panchayat President: It is unlawful to bind someone against their will.

Bino K Cherian, head of the Valakom panchayat, said, “According to local residents, Asok picked up the injury when he broke a window pane in the house with his hands.” It was claimed that he was intoxicated. Tieping someone up, however, is prohibited. However, it was them who transported the sufferer to the hospital and phoned the police, Bino said.

“We’re not sure whether the gang attacked him. However, it is unlawful to even bind someone against their consent, according to Bino.
