“Inadequate Training…”: Prime Minister Modi Talks About AI, Deepfakes In Conversation With Bill Gates, Outlines Dos And Don’ts

While speaking with Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates on the future of artificial intelligence on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi enumerated the difficulties associated with the technology and said that he has also been the victim of deepfakes.

Gates said that one is “surprised at how good this is and you are also surprised at how bad it is” while speaking about artificial intelligence.

It will accomplish tasks that you see as difficult and then fall short in those that you perceive as simple. I began my journey in Hyderabad, which was fortunate as Microsoft is commemorating 25 years in the nation, and it has been an amazing experience. I thus put the crew there to the test, saying that we needed to improve the accuracy. AI is currently just a co-pilot that makes suggestions; we still have the last say when it comes to choosing prescription drugs, composing letters, etc. He asked the prime minister, “How do you think India will approach that? It seems like AI is a huge opportunity, but there are several challenges that come with that.”

“I have noticed that if such a powerful technology is placed in unskilled hands, there’s a significant risk of misuse,” Prime Minister Modi said.

“I have engaged with leading minds in AI,” he said. To stop false information, I proposed that we start with a visible watermark on material produced by AI. This is to acknowledge AI creations for what they are, not to minimize their worth. Deepfake technology may be abused by anybody in a large democratic nation such as India. For instance, if they mistreat my voice, at first others will believe it, causing a commotion.

Acknowledging the AI-generated nature of deepfake and citing its source is crucial. These precautions are crucial, particularly in the early going. We must define a few dos and don’ts. Additionally, it is best to use AI in a sector in which you are an expert. Using it only out of exhaustion or excessive usage is not the ideal strategy. Instead of using technology to offer genuine value, it would simply be a means to kill time if I am unable to make judgments and end up using it for my own amusement.

The prime minister has already raised awareness about deepfakes. Speaking at a BJP Diwali celebration the previous year, Prime Minister Modi said that he had instructed the ChatGpt team to identify deepfakes and provide a warning if such films surfaced online.

The Prime Minister used a deepfake video of himself doing the Garba, a typical Gujarati holiday dance, to demonstrate his point. “I just came into a video where I seemed to be playing Garba. Since school, I haven’t done Garba,” he said.

“There are a lot more videos like these on the internet,” Prime Minister Modi told reporters at the Diwali Milan event held at the Delhi headquarters of the BJP. Additionally, the prime minister asked the media to inform the public about these phony films.

He issued a warning: “It is crucial that technology be used responsibly in the age of artificial intelligence.”

In a lighter spirit, the prime minister stated: “Artificial intelligence is very important” while speaking about it. Mothers are referred to as “aai” in several areas and dialects of our nation. I like to joke that when a kid is born in India these days, he says “aai” and “AI.”

Praising India’s rapid adoption of AI in several industries, Gates said, “I believe the important thing is that the digital infrastructure continues becoming more sophisticated. Many individuals are aware of the payment and identification systems. However, that’s kind of a second step when you go into the various regions for farmers, registering their property, providing child tutoring, and maintaining the health records. And the third phase, which is just getting started, will see these advancements in artificial intelligence build upon the previous one and increase the value even more.
