Kerala Governor’s order to designate a varsity representative is rejected by KTU

The governor of the university, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, has asked the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) to reject his request for a representative to be nominated to the search-cum-selection committee in order to pick a new vice-chancellor.

The decision was rejected by the KTU Board of Governors during their meeting on Monday in Thiruvananthapuram, on the grounds that the Chancellor is not authorized under the UGC Regulation 2018 to form a selection committee. The resolution to oppose the governor’s instruction under Rule 38 (7) of the university legislation, put up by Board of Governors member Prof. G Sanjeev, was unanimously approved by the meeting.

The resolution said that the President is now considering the measure that was enacted by the state legislature and included the UGC rule. It said that it was improper to address this issue while the Supreme Court was deliberating on a government suit challenging the action. According to the Board of Governors meeting, the state’s B.Tech admissions have increased by 13%. Students who have completed their B.Tech since 2015 will have their results translated into marks.

On March 7, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will cut the ribbon to begin building of the university’s Valapillashala headquarters. March 5 is the day of the university’s first convocation.
