Mumbai Zika Virus Case Found; 79-Year-Old Patient Now Completely Recovered: City Council

A 79-year-old city resident who contracted the Zika virus has subsequently fully recovered, according to a statement made on Wednesday by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Zika infection is a “self-limiting disease,” according to a press release, so people shouldn’t fear.

The patient, a resident of the Chembur area, has Zika virus infection, the National Institute of Virology in Pune verified, according to the BMC.

He began experiencing symptoms on July 19, 2023, including fever, runny nose, and cough, for which he sought symptomatic therapy from a private physician. According to the press statement, the patient got well and was released on August 2.

The patient has many comorbid conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and thalassemia minor, and underwent an angioplasty 20 years before.

The press statement said that the zika virus disease is self-limiting and that 80% of those who are afflicted have no symptoms.

A study of nearby homes was conducted, however the BMC reported that no more instances were found.

According to the press release, the Zika virus causes a “mild illness” that is spread by infected Aedes mosquitoes, which also spread Dengue and Chikungunya.

The press announcement said that “Vector control measures were undertaken” after Aedes reproduction was discovered in building parking.

It advised people not to worry but to take precautions against mosquito breeding instead.

The civic-run KEM hospital has a zika virus testing laboratory.

The Zika virus infection manifests as fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint discomfort, malaise, and headache, according to the press release.
