On the anniversary of his passing, PM Modi honors freedom fighter Shyamji Krishna Varma

On the anniversary of his passing on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid respects to revolutionary freedom fighter Shyamji Krishna Varma, hailing him as a pillar of the independence cause.

Modi said on X that Varma’s unwavering passion and dedication to the fight for independence would always be remembered.

His founding of India House acted as a seed for the global independence movement. In a tweet on the microblogging site, the prime minister said, “Let us also pledge to uphold the ideals he fought for as we remember his contributions.”

Varma, who was born in Gujarat in 1857, established the Indian Home Rule Society, India House, and The Indian Sociologist in London with the goal of advancing Indian independence and nationalism.

In his capacity as chief minister of Gujarat, Modi had returned Varma’s ashes from Switzerland, his place of death, in 2003.
