President Murmu received a report titled “One Nation, One Poll.”

NEW DELHI: On Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu received the report from the committee on “One Nation, One Election,” which was chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The paper bases its case for electoral simultaneity on the argument that grouping the elections together would prevent disruptions to society and the economy from coming from conducting multiple elections.

Following 191 days of study and consultation with stakeholders and experts, the High Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections met with President Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan and turned in its report, which totals 18,626 pages. The committee was established on September 2, 2023.

The Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) leader Gulam Nabi Azad, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other committee members were present when the report was presented.
As part of its recent meeting, the High-Level Committee also included members from a number of political groups, including the BJP, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, CPI, CPI (M), AIMIM, RPI, and Apna Dal. The committee received written comments from these party members.

The committee has also asked for public input on the issue of “One Nation, One Election.” The notice was titled, “Notice for inviting suggestions from members of the general public for making appropriate changes in the existing legal administrative framework to enable simultaneous elections in the country.”
A high-level committee was formed by the central government in September of last year to study the concept of “one nation, one election” and provide suggestions for holding simultaneous polls throughout the country.
Every year, elections are scheduled in some regions. In certain states, polls take up to 200–300 days a year due to the many panchayat and local body elections.
However, the action will need a number of adjustments, from standardizing electoral records to modifying the laws and Constitution; a roadmap for these changes has been included in the proposals made.
The route towards switching to a single election model will be one of the most important things to observe, as assemblies have been elected at various periods and it would be necessary to revise certain assembly members’ terms in order to synchronize new polls with Lok Sabha elections. The government will need to make legislative amendments after analyzing the report, which will make the process lengthy.
