Punjab Police Establishes SIT To Examine Deportation of Indian Students from Canada

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was established by the Punjab police on Monday to look into the deportation of students from Canada.

About 700 students are involved in the issue, and they risk being deported because of “fake offer letters” that their agent in Jalandhar sent them.

India has constantly urged Canadian authorities to treat the kids fairly and humanely ever since they were reportedly the victims of some agents. The sources said that there are significantly less than 700 Indian students who may really be deported from Canada.

“The majority of these students visited Canada between 2017 and 2019. Some of them received work permits after finishing their courses, while others kept on studying in Canada, according to a source. India has raised the issue with Canadian officials in both New Delhi and Canada.

S. Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, also raised the issue with his Canadian colleague. The source referenced above said that “Canadian authorities were repeatedly urged to be fair and take a humanitarian approach since the students were not at fault.”

It went on to say that the students were given visas and permitted entry to Canada because of “gaps in the Canadian system and a lack of diligence.”

Canadian lawmakers from all political parties have come out in favour of the students over the last several days. According to the sources, Canada is aggressively looking for a solution for overseas students who are experiencing uncertainty, as revealed by Immigration Minister Sean Frasier. The importance for treating students fairly has been highlighted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“Some students have recently received stay orders on their deportation notices,” the insider said.  It is encouraging that the persistent efforts of the Indian government have helped the Canadian government take a humanitarian stance and consider the viewpoint of the students, the source added.
