Sambhal MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq of SP passes away at age 93 after a protracted illness

Shafiqur Rahman Barq, the MP for the Samajwadi Party from Sambhal, passed away on Tuesday while receiving care at a private hospital in Moradabad after a protracted illness, the party said.

When Barq’s health worsened, he was brought to a private hospital in Moradabad. He was ninety-three.

On July 11, 1930, Barq was born in Sambhal.

The four-time MLA and senior SP leader was elected MP from Sambhal in 2019.

He was twice elected to Parliament representing Sambhal and three times elected as MP from Moradabad.

Zia-ur-Rehman Barq, his grandson, is the SP MLA for Moradabad’s Kundarki seat.

“It is very sorry to learn about the passing of Samajwadi Party senior leader and MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq Saheb. I hope his soul is at peace. May the surviving family members find the fortitude to endure this great loss. “Heartfelt homage,” the SP wrote on X.

Akhilesh Yadav, the head of the SP, too sent his condolences on Barq’s passing.

Barq caused controversy with his remarks about Vande Mataram, claiming that it was “anti-Islam.”

His comparison of the Taliban’s actions in Afghanistan to India’s liberation movement in his words also generated a controversy.
