Santhan, a murder suspect in Rajiv Gandhi, passes away from cardiac arrest

According to a government source, Santhan, who was convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case and subsequently exonerated by the Supreme Court, passed away here on Wednesday from heart arrest.

Santhan, also known as T Suthendiraraja, is a 55-year-old Sri Lankan citizen. In 2022, the Supreme Court released seven individuals who had been incarcerated for more than 20 years in relation to the 1991 assassination of the previous prime minister in this area.

Santhan passed away at 7:50 in the morning, according to E Theranirajan, dean of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for “liver failure”.

Around four in the morning on Wednesday, Santhan went into cardiac arrest. However, Theranirajan informed reporters that he was “revived” after doing CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), receiving oxygen, and being placed on a ventilator.

He said, nevertheless, that Santhan did not react to therapy and “died at 7.50 am today.”

“A post-mortem will be conducted….legal arrangements are underway for the body to be sent to Sri Lanka,” he said.

The dead was brought to this hospital on January 27 due to “liver failure” from a special camp in Tiruchirappalli, where he was staying after being released, according to the dean.
