Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla meets with opposition leaders but is unable to break the impasse

The government and opposition leaders met on Tuesday under the leadership of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, but they were unable to resolve the impasse.

The administration promised a response from Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the topic of the violence in Manipur, but the opposition remained steadfast in its demand that Prime Minister Narendra make a remark on the matter. The Opposition has already criticized Modi for being mute on Manipur.

Since May 3, Meitei and tribal groups in the state of Manipur have been engaged in ethnic warfare. There have been thousands of displaced persons and over 150 fatalities. During this period, there have also been assaults on homes, religious structures, public facilities, and political targets. A video of two indigenous women being paraded nude and being touched emerged last week, sparking indignation throughout the country. On May 4, the event took place.

The sittings of both chambers have been disrupted by adjournments and little work has been done as the opposition insists that Modi make a statement on Manipur.

Birla had made additional efforts to break the impasse after repeated interruptions, legislative sources said after the meeting, according to PTI.

The government was prepared for a debate, the deputy leader and defense minister Rajnath Singh and the home minister Shah informed the Lok Sabha, according to PTI.
