The dean of a medical school in Pune was arrested for accepting a bribe of Rs. 10 lakh for MBBS admission

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) said that the dean of the medical institution managed by a Pune municipal body trust was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly receiving a Rs 10 lakh bribe in exchange for offering an MBBS seat.

The defendant is named as Ashish Bangirwar, dean of the Pune Municipal Corporation Medical Education Trust-operated Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College.

According to the ACB, the complainant’s son received a place under the institutional quota in the first round of admission to the medical college.

“(To move the process along), the dean wanted a Rs 16 lakh payment from a father in addition to the Rs 22.50 lakh in government fees to ensure his son’s admission to the MBBS programme. In the meanwhile, the individual informed the dean that he would pay the first installment of Rs. 10 lakh before approaching the ACB. Bangirwar was captured on Tuesday when he was taking Rs 10 lakh after a trap was established, according to the ACB. Under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, a case has been filed, and additional investigation is under progress.
