Bangladesh defeats Afghanistan by 546 runs in the match, which is the third-largest win margin in test history

Taskin Ahmed’s career-best 4-37 helped Bangladesh defeat Afghanistan by 546 runs on Saturday, securing the largest test win margin by runs in over 90 years.

A Taskin bouncer struck Zahir Khan, causing the last batsman to retire injured, and the Dhaka match was called during the prolonged opening session on the fourth day.

The hosts now hold the record for the largest Test win by runs since Australia’s 562-run triumph over England in 1934. The visitors hardly put a dent in their massive case of 662.

It was more than twice as many victories as Bangladesh’s previous record of 226 victories versus Zimbabwe in Chittagong in 2005.

When the home team proclaimed their second innings at 425/4 in the closing session on Friday, victory was all but certain.

Ibrahim Zadran was lost for a duck off the first ball of the game, and Afghanistan rapidly ran into trouble. On Saturday, they resumed play with a shaky 45/2.

On the fourth day, Afghanistan made little progress and continued to lose wickets often, with Taskin and Shoriful Islam spearheading Bangladesh’s attack.

When Taskin dismissed last man Zahir Khan in the 33rd over of the innings, the umpire called a no ball, depriving Taskin of his first five-wicket haul.

In the third over of the morning, Nasir Jamal edged Ebadot Hossain behind the stumps for six runs, costing Afghanistan a wicket.

Five overs later, after making six runs as well, Shoriful, who had taken 3-28, forced Afsar Zazai to throw a catch to Mehidy Hasan at gully.

As a concussion replacement for captain Hasmatullah Shahidi, who had to be injured after being struck by a bouncer from Taskin on the third day, it brought Bahir Shah to the crease.

However, Bahir also didn’t last very long when Taskin made him pass a catch to Taijul Islam at the slip for seven.

Rahmat Shah’s tenacious innings of 30 from 73 balls was ended by Liton Das with a catch behind the wickets off Taskin.

Prior to being bowled for 18 by Taskin, Karim Janat shown some aggressiveness by striking two sixes.

Afghanistan was reduced to eight down when spinner Mehidy Hasan removed Amir Hamza for five, and Taskin took care of the rest.

On a green wicket, Bangladesh scored 382 runs in the first innings before dismissing Afghanistan for 146 to grab a 236-run advantage.

Afghanistan triumphed against Bangladesh by 224 runs in Chittagong in 2019 to win the lone other Test between the two sides.
