Down and out: PSG recovers with a 10-man Barcelona fades in the second half

Paris Saint-Germain overcame Barcelona by using an extra player for almost an hour of play to go to the Champions League semifinals.

In what is likely to be Kylian Mbappe’s last season with the team, PSG overcame their home defeat in the first leg to win 4-1 against Barcelona on Tuesday. The victory moved them up to 6-4 on aggregate and maintained their ambitions of winning a first-ever European championship.

PSG also had goals from former Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha. They capitalized on Ronald Araujo, a defender for Barcelona, being sent off in the 29th minute for fouling Bradley Barcola while attempting to halt a breakaway.

“We were well-organized when it came to 11 vs 11. Everything changes with the send-off. The whole game shifted,” said Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez, who was dismissed for his own complaints later on. We had hoped to match PSG 11 versus 11. It was not appropriate to give it a red card.

Dortmund digs deep.

Dortmund: In a tense 4-2 victory against Atletico Madrid, Marcel Sabitzer scored a late goal and assisted on another two to propel Borussia Dortmund into the quarterfinals.

Dortmund needed to come from behind twice over the course of two legs to progress 5-4 on aggregate after losing the opening leg of their quarterfinal match 2-1 in Madrid.

Before Ian Maatsen was put up by Sabitzer to give Dortmund a 2-0 lead for the evening, Julian Brandt opened the score to draw the game.

At the half, Diego Simeone, the Atletico coach, made three adjustments that paid handsomely. The Spanish team regained the lead on aggregate thanks to goals from replacement Joaquin Correa and Mats Hummels.

After nine scoreless games, Sabitzer then set up Niclas Fullkrug for the Germany forward’s first goal in the 71st minute, and three minutes later, Sabitzer scored to put Dortmund into the round of four. “That was quite an amazing evening, quite a rollercoaster,” said Hans-Joachim Watzke, CEO of Dortmund. Not every day is the same for Borussia Dortmund. We haven’t advanced to the semifinals since 2013. It’s a wonderful day for every Borussen.
