India wins the Asia Cup for a record-extending eighth time with to Mohammed Siraj’s 6/21 as IND defeat SL by 10 wickets

India extended their record by winning their eighth Asia Cup championship in 2023 by defeating Sri Lanka by a margin of 10 wickets. Leading the charge, Mohammed Siraj took six wickets to hold the reigning champions to only 50 runs. On Sunday, September 10, at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill easily completed the 51-run chase as India prevailed by 10 wickets.

Dasun Shanaka, the captain of Sri Lanka, won the toss and decided to bowl; however, this choice backfired spectacularly as Siraj’s six-wicket haul put the Sri Lankan batting order in serious peril. The 29-year-old only conceded 21 runs while taking six wickets, including four in one over.

Kusal Perera was out for a duck early on by Jasprit Bumrah, which prevented Sri Lanka’s batsmen from ever getting underway.

As Pathum Nissanka was eliminated from the game on base two by Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja took a sharp catch in the field. They were taken aback by the fourth over of Sri Lanka’s innings, in which Nissanka was out on the first ball, Sadeera Samarawickrama on the third, LBW, and Charith Asalanka on the next delivery, with Kishan collecting the catch.

Siraj was on a hat-trick but fell short of being only the third bowler in the Asia Cup to record a hat-trick.

In a record-breaking performance for Indian bowlers, Dhanjaya de Silva took five wickets in the space of 16 balls after being dismissed on 4, the last delivery of the over. Before taking out Kusal Mendis, who had scored the most runs in the Sri Lankan batting order and was on 17, the great bowler took out Dasun Shanaka, who was Siraj’s sixth victim.

The star of the previous India-Sri Lanka match, Dunith Wellalage, who took five wickets against India and scored 42 runs in the Super 4 match, was subsequently eliminated by Hardik Pandya’s three wickets. Pramod Madhushan was out on 1, and after that, the team was dismissed for only 50 runs, with Matheesha Pathirana being the most recent victim after scoring a duck.

India was assigned a target of 51 runs to win their seventh Asia Cup championship, and Rohit chose to elevate Ishan to open with Gill as they easily completed the chase.

In order to finish the chase, Kishan delivered an undefeated innings of 23 runs in 18 balls, including three fours, then Gill hammered 27 in 19 balls with six boundaries.
