Despite AC Milan’s defeat, Luka Jovic salvages a point against Salernitana

Luka Jovic’s last-minute equalizer in Friday’s 2-2 draw at Serie A’s basement club helped AC Milan salvage a point at Salernitana. After a clever knock-down by Olivier Giroud, Serbian striker Jovic scored his third goal in as many league games to save third-place Milan from suffering a humiliating loss. In the sixty-third minute, Antonio Candreva seemed to have given Salernitana a stunning victory when his long-range attempt slid past Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who is often dependable.

Additionally, Candreva set up Federico Fazio’s equalizer after Fikayo Tomori had given the opposition the lead in the seventeenth minute.

After Jovic’s equalizer, Salernitana is now four points behind Udinese, who are playing at Torino on Sunday and are now narrowly outside the relegation zone.

clear of their match on Sunday at the San Siro against Lecce, Milan runs the danger of falling farther behind league leaders Inter Milan, who are eight points clear of their local rivals.

Coach Stefano Pioli told DAZN, “The hardest thing to do here was to throw away this match, and that’s what we did.”

“We were controlling the match but we got distracted and at this level, you can’t do that.”

Pioli’s club is now facing competition from Fiorentina in the top four after the latter cut the gap to three points in fourth place after defeating Inter Milan 1-0 on the road behind an early goal from Lucas Beltran.

Tomori got injured as well, marking Milan’s thirtyth injury loss in a season that seems to be cursed for the seven-time European winners.

Bologna, who eliminated Inter from the Italian Cup, welcomes Atalanta with great confidence. A victory on Sunday would take them two points behind Milan in fourth place.

The first match on Sunday’s schedule features Inter’s closest rivals, Juventus, who are four points behind the lead and play entertaining Frosinone.

Earlier, Lazio easily defeated Empoli 2-0 at lowly Empoli to stop a five-game losing skid away from home. Goals from Matteo Guendouzi and Mattia Zaccagni completed the victory.

Midway through the first half, Maurizio Sarri’s team lost midfield star Ciro Immobile to injury, but they still managed to defeat Empoli, who trail Udinese by one point in the 18th rank.

Lazio is one point behind their local rivals Roma, who visit champions Napoli on Saturday night, in eighth place with 24 points from 17 games.

“The quality could have been better, but we were decent today,” Sarri said.

“Having to make those two substitutes shook us considerably, but after making two, our brains cleared. I hope we’re back to feeling like ourselves.”

After coming back from a goal down to win 2-1 against Sassuolo, who were without key player Domenico Berardi due to fever, promoted Genoa managed to climb seven points clear of the relegation zone.
