Poland and Ukraine advance to the Euros

Ukraine pulled off another comeback victory with a late goal. In penalty shootouts, Poland and Georgia maintained their composure. Everybody is headed to the European Championship. The final 24-nation roster for Euro 2024 was announced on Tuesday. Three qualifying playoffs will give the competition, which begins in Germany on June 14, a more eastern European flavour.

Ukraine defeated Iceland 2-1 thanks to a sweeping low strike by Mykhailo Mudryk in the 84th minute, marking the second consecutive postseason late comeback triumph for a club from the war-torn nation. Due to security concerns during Russia’s military invasion, international matches cannot be held in Kyiv; as a result, Ukraine’s “home” game was played in neutral Poland. Russia’s squad was barred by UEFA from attempting to qualify.

Georgia, who defeated Greece 4-2 in a penalty shootout, will play in their first major tournament at Euro 2024 with star attacker Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. It had been a boisterous 0-0 stalemate in Tbilisi, one marked by tension and acrimony. Poland, who had previously drawn 0-0 and defeated Wales 5-4 in a penalty shootout in Cardiff, were the last side to secure a trip to Germany. — AP
