SP MLAs’ cross-voting

Tuesday night’s voting for Uttar Pradesh’s ten Rajya Sabha seats came to a conclusion, raising worries inside the Samajwadi Party (SP) over cross-voting and the party chief whip’s resignation during the state’s election process.

The 403-member Assembly currently consists of 399 members and 4 vacancies. 395 of the 399 MLAs cast ballots on Tuesday; three were unable to do so because they are incarcerated, and authorities were unable to verify the identity of the other MLA who did not cast a ballot.

“The polls were open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. At 5:00 p.m., the vote count began, according to Returning Officer Brijbhushan Dubey.

Voting in RS elections are politicians

Voting were cast by a number of prominent figures, including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, and President of the Samajwadi Party (SP), Akhilesh Yadav. Concerns of cross-voting and the resignation of SP chief whip Manoj Pandey during the polls prompted Yadav to threaten to take action against these MLAs. “Those who sought to take advantage of the circumstances will go. Before casting his ballot, Yadav informed the reporters at the assembly, “Those who were given assurances (by the BJP) will go.”

Regarding cross-voting, Akhilesh Yadav

“The BJP is capable of using any tactic to win elections. Some MLAs must have been assured of a benefit by it. “BJP will stop at nothing to win,” he said. “Those who lack the bravery to stand up will fall.” Some may have been intimidated or offered anything, while others may have been terrified for their safety.”

The main opposition SP and the governing BJP both have enough Assembly members to send seven and three members, respectively, to the Rajya Sabha without opposition; however, the BJP put forth an eighth candidate, adding intrigue to the battle. Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Keshav Prasad Maurya told the media that Yadav erred by fielding a third candidate and that he lacks the necessary numbers.

“The SP has become ‘Samaptwadi Party’ and all the eight candidates of the BJP will win,” he said. Pathak further said that all of the BJP’s candidates will prevail. The same car carried SP MLAs Rakesh Pratap Singh, Abhay Singh, and Rakesh Pandey, three of the eight party members who did not attend Yadav’s Monday night meeting. “We will vote in accordance with our inner guidance,” said Rakesh Pratap Singh.

With 252 and 108 members, respectively, the BJP and the SP have the majority of seats in the 403-member House. The SP’s coalition partner, the Congress, has two seats. Thirteen seats are held by the BJP ally Apna Dal (Sonelal), six by the Nishad Party, nine by the RLD, six by the SBSP, two by Jansatta Dal Loktantrik, and one by the BSP. There are now four open seats.

The BJP has selected the following candidates:

RPN Singh, a former Union minister
Chaudhary Tejveer Singh, a former MP, and Amarpal Maurya, the general secretary of the party’s Uttar Pradesh section
